This association, founded in 1893, is dedicated to the study of historical, archaeological, and biological questions that concern the city of Ghent and the Flanders region. Today, the MGOG plays a crucial role in connecting the academic community, the heritage sector, and the public. It organizes activities and publishes journals and books that delve into the historical, archaeological, and biological aspects of Ghent's past. By integrating new scientific methods, such as ancient DNA analysis and bioarchaeological studies, the Society broadens its understanding of past civilizations and their environments.

Collaborating with experts from biology and archaeology, the MGOG leverages modern techniques to reconstruct the lives of ancient inhabitants, their health, diet, and genetic heritage. The analysis of biological remains, from human skeletons to plant and animal materials, provides a deeper insight into the ecosystems and biodiversity of historical periods in Flanders. This interdisciplinary approach not only enriches our knowledge of Ghent's past but also offers valuable perspectives on how societies interacted with their natural environment, adapting to ecological changes over time.

The MGOG maintains close ties with cultural and academic institutions in Ghent that are deeply involved in the city’s historical and biological heritage, such as Ghent University, the City Archives, the STAM (City Museum of Ghent), and the City Archaeology Department. The Society also works with conservation biologists to ensure the preservation of delicate artifacts and historical structures, employing cutting-edge biological techniques to safeguard these treasures for future generations.

Furthermore, the Society is an active member of the East Flemish Association of History Circles and engages in joint initiatives with its sister organization in Bruges, such as the publication of a series of monographs on the intertwined history and biological heritage of Flanders. These collaborative efforts are supported by the Province of East Flanders and the Flemish Government, ensuring the continued exploration and preservation of both historical and biological legacies.
