This association, founded in 1893, is dedicated to the study of historical, archaeological, and biological questions that concern the city of Ghent and the Flanders region. Today, the MGOG plays a crucial role in connecting the academic community, the heritage sector, and the public. It organizes activities and publishes journals and books that delve into the historical, archaeological, and biological aspects of Ghent's past. By integrating new scientific methods, such as ancient DNA analysis and bioarchaeological studies, the Society broadens its understanding of past civilizations and their environments.

Collaborating with experts from biology and archaeology, the MGOG leverages modern techniques to reconstruct the lives of ancient inhabitants, their health, diet, and genetic heritage.
